Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team fell in a two-game series to the Lewis (Ill.) Flyers on opening day at the FSU Softball Field, with 6-2 and 3-0 finals on the day in Tuesday (March 29) action.

Ferris State managed to get 10 runners aboard in the first game, but was held to two runs on the day. The Bulldogs loaded the bases twice in the opener, but were staved off by timely pitching. Ferris State scraped out six walks and four hits in the opener.

One of the four hits was a solo shot to right centerfield, off the bat of senior centerfielder Paige Kortz, who took the first pitch she saw and ripped it over the fence for her team-leading sixth home run of the campaign.

In game one, sophomore pitcher Aryn Gallacher took the loss, striking out one. She allowed six runs on nine hits on the afternoon.

Ferris State battled out more at-bats in the second game and managed nine hits with three walks for 12 base runners, but again could not plate enough to defeat the Flyers.

The Bulldogs got two hits out of sophomore infielders Amara Zukowski and Evelyn Blood, but Lewis pitchers Payton Wuske and Delaney Garden managed to get the Flyers out of several jams.

Ferris State senior pitcher Kristie Gray spread out nine hits and three runs with no strike outs, allowing three earned runs in a 3-0 loss. Sophomore pitcher Mckenzie Cleland came on and worked a spotless inning of relief, snaring a line-drive comebacker for the second out of the top of the seventh inning.

The Bulldogs struck out nine times in the contest at the hands of Wuske and Garden.

Ferris State heads on the road to make-up a pair of games at Wayne State to open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on Thursday (March 31) in Detroit. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. (ET) while the second game begins shortly after at 5 p.m. (ET).
