Laker Tennis Competes in the PTR's Spring Tennis Fest

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Lake Superior State University Men's and Women's Tennis are competing in the Professional Tennis Registry's Spring Tennis Fest this week in Hilton Head Island, S.C. Results after each day's matches will be updated here. 

Monday, March 7:

Women's: Lakers 0, University of Tampa 7

Men's: Lakers 5, Salem 2

The women's team fell in all three doubles matches against Tampa and five out of the six singles matches were decided in two sets. Freshman Maddie Whip played a decisive third set in her match but fell in the third set by scores of 0-6, 6-4, and 7-10. 

The men's team dropped the doubles point to Salem as only the Lakers No. 3 pair of Diego Penz and Xavier Vicent Navarro won their match. In singles play, No. 1 Juho Kantola, No. 2 Vicent Navarro, No. 3 Krishan Taneja, No. 5 Aaron Osmond, and No. 6 Penz all won their singles matches for the Lakers. 

Wednesday, March 9:

Women's: Lakers 1, Lewis 4

Men's: Lakers 0, Lewis 4

The women's team clinched the doubles point against Lewis as the team's No. 2 pair of Muskaan Ranjan and Maddie Whip and the No. 3 pair of Keegan Malpass and Claudia Sole both won their matches. Ranjan and Whip won by a 6-3 mark and Malpass and Sole won in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5). In singles play, the Flyers won the top four matches to win the match by a score of 4-1.

The men's team lost the doubles competition to Lewis as only the Lakers third pair of Taneja and Osmand won their match (6-2). In singles play, Lewis won the top three singles matches. Lakers No. 1 singles player Kantola fell in the decisive third set by scores of 4-6, 6-4, and 13-11. The final three sets went unfinished as Lewis had already secured four points to take the match. 

Thursday, March 10:

Women's: Lakers 4, Barton College 3

Men's: Lakers 3, Barton College 4

The women's team secured the doubles point against Barton as the team's No. 2 pair of Muskaan Ranjan and Maddie Whip won by a score of 6-3 and the team's No. 3 pair of Keegan Malpass and Claudia Sole won by a 6-4 score. In singles play, Nadege Koua won the No. 1 match in a desicive third set by scores of 6-7, 6-1, and 10-4. Barton won the No. 2, 3, and 4 singles matches. In the No. 5 singles match, Maddie Whip won by consecutive scores of 6-2. In the No. 6 match, Julia Fraile Raton won by scores of 6-4 and 6-3. 

In the men's match against Barton, the Lakers won the doubles competition to earn a point. No. 1 pair of Juho Kantola and Harris Rehan won in a tiebreaker and No. 3 pair of Aaron Osmond and Krishan Taneja won by a 6-4 score. In singles play, Kantola won his match in two sets (6-1, 6-2) while Xavier Vicent Navarro won his match after a retirement from his opponent. Barton clinched the final four singles points to win the match by a 4-3 score. 

What's Next

The Lakers will play the Marian University Knights on Tuesday, March 8 at 8:30 a.m. at the Hilton Head Beach & Tennis Resort and will follow with a match against the Lewis University Flyers on Wednesday, March 9 at 8:15 a.m. at Hilton Head High School.
