Women's Tennis Posts 7-0 Senior Day Victory, Clinches GLIAC Tournament First Round Bye

The Warriors recorded their fourth consecutive shutout after their defeat of Purdue Northwest.

DETROIT -- The eighth-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (19-3 overall, 6-1 GLIAC) ensured itself of a first round bye in next weekend's GLIAC Tournament after defeating Purdue Northwest (9-9 overall, 4-3 GLIAC) by a score of 7-0 on Saturday inside the Duchene Athletic Facility.

The Warriors will be the two-seed in the conference tournament, trailing only Grand Valley State.  Both will not play on Friday after earning byes into the second round.

Senior Day was also celebrated on Saturday, and the Green and Gold recognized Sabrina Laynes (Saginaw, Mich.) and her accomplishments as a member of the women's tennis team.

DOUBLES
Doubles was a knock-down-drag-out battle, with the portion of the match lasting just over an hour.  By the end, the Warriors came out on top in all three to secure the opening point.

The No. 2 doubles pairing of Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) made quick work of Oona Kintscher and Hayley Tsuen, downing them 6-1 to kick off the action.

The duo of Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) and Shanice Weekes (London, England) clinched the point for WSU following their 6-3 win over Mar Vilanova and Salma Raslan at the third flight.

Although it did not matter for the doubles point, the No. 35-ranked tandem of Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) played one of the tightest doubles matches of the entire season.  The duo nabbed a 7-6 (7-5) victory vs. Sienna Lopez and Aarni Reddy Yellu at the top flight position. It marked the first time this season that Ruyssen and Komar were locked in a tie-breaking battle in doubles.

SINGLES
It was another clean sweep for the Warriors in singles action.  The Green and Gold have surrendered just two total points during their six-match winning streak, outscoring their opponents 38-2 in that span.

Singles was highlighted by the play of Laynes, as the senior capped off a day of celebration with matching set wins of 6-1 in a victory over Raslan at the sixth spot.  The Warrior played both ends of the back-to-back vs. Davenport and Purdue Northwest this weekend, and came out on top both times to improve to 4-0 in her spring dual matches.

Gorgidze and Komar made efficient work of their Pride foes at the fourth and second positions, respectively.  Gorgidze nabbed a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Patricia Dizon, while Komar topped Reddy Yellu by scores of 6-0 and 6-3.

Ruyssen, the No. 34-ranked singles player, notched a 6-2, 6-4 win against Lopez at the junior's usual top flight position.  This was the clinching point for the Warriors to give them their 19th spring win.  After dropping four matches in a row from March 14 to March 31, the Warrior rattled off five consecutive victories to finish the regular season.

Also winning on Saturday were Arafat and Weekes.  Arafat capped off a perfect 7-0 conference record with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 triumph vs. Kintscher at the third spot, while Weekes earned a 6-4, 6-0 straight sets win in facing Tsuen.
