Wayne State takes opener 80-65 over SVSU

DETROIT – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team opened a weekend Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference road series with Wayne State University Friday in Detroit.

The Warriors used an 8-0 run in the first half to establish control of the contest and led by six at the break. Wayne State stretched the lead out to 13 shortly after halftime and held on to top SVSU 80-65.

The loss drops the Cardinals to 3-10 overall and 3-10 in the GLIAC.

Myles Belyeu led the Cardinals with a season-high 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field. Delano Smith added 17 points, including three 3-pointers, and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Cardinals shot 25-of-57 from the field, 8-of-25 from deep, and 7-of-10 from the line, finishing with five assists, four steals and 15 turnovers.

Brailen Neely led the Warriors with 23 points, while Avery Lewis added a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

The series concludes between SVSU and Wayne State at 2 pm Saturday in Detroit.
