Volleyball Dominates Davenport

The Warriors swept their opponent for the eighth time this season.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (12-3 overall, 6-1 GLIAC) began a three-match weekend with a sweep over Davenport (8-8 overall, 3-4 GLIAC) on Friday night.  The Warriors won by scores of 25-15, 25-15 and 25-18 en route to posting their eighth sweep of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Green & Gold won the first five points of hte first set.  WSU used an 8-0 run to extend its advantage to 14-3.  Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.) had three kills during the rally.  A Panthers error gave Wayne State a 20-8 lead and another spike from Morrison pushed the home lead to 24-11.  After DU won four consecutive points, a kill from Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) sealed the 25-15 set-one victory.

The Panthers led the second set 4-2 after a WSU ball-handling error.  However, Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) redeemed herself quickly with a service ace as the Warriors stretched their advantage to 11-9 following kills from Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) and Jenna Kray (Westerville, Ohio / Worthington Christian).  Two kills from Duffield kept Wayne State on top, 16-13.  DU trimmed its deficit to one, 16-15, before WSU ended the set on a 9-0 run to win 25-15.

WSU led the third set 5-1 and then 10-5 after a point by Wagner.  Morrison continued to ignite the Wayne State offense and her four straight kills kept WSU ahead 16-13.  Alexa Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens) made it 18-16 as the Warriors would control the temp and extend their lead to 23-17 after a block by Kray and Duffield.  Back-to-back kills from Morrison gave WSU a 25-18 victory and a 3-0 sweep.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Morrison collected a match-high 15 kills and hit .423 on 26 swings.  Wagner tallied 11 kills and hit .348.  Duffield dished out 35 assists, while Sam Palazzolo (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) led everyone with 10 digs.

ONE BIG THING
The .414 hitting percentage ranks second all-time in program history behind a .547 performance against Chicago State in 1987.

HEAD COACH THOUGHTS
"That was an outstanding offensive performance by the Warriors," said head coach Tim Koth.  DU is a big physical team and our offensive production was outstanding.  Great performance from Maddie Morrison tonight!"
