Women's Basketball Spoils Edinboro's Home-Opener for Fifth Straight Victory

The Warriors had five score in double-figures.

EDINBORO, Pa. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (5-1 overall) played spoiler on Tuesday evening inside the McComb Fieldhouse, defeating Edinboro University (1-3 overall) 78-67 in EU's home-opener.  WSU notched its fifth consecutive victory in the triumph.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Edinboro jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 1:01 following a pair of free throws by Ava Haddad and a driving layup from Ashten Boggs.  Wayne State's first basket came on a jumper from sophomore forward Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) just past the 90 second mark.  The Fighting Scots led for the entire period and held a four-point edge (20-16) after 10 minutes.  Five of WSU's 16 points in the first quarter came courtesy of freshman guard McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) in a starting role, while sophomore forward Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.) contributed four points.

Second Quarter
The Green and Gold nabbed its first lead of the contest following an 8-0 run over the first 2:19 of the new quarter.  Ferguson and junior forward Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) each knocked down a pair of free throws, before junior guard Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) connected on a driving layup to put the Warriors ahead 22-20.  The Warriors achieved an extended 16-4 run through the first six minutes of the period to put them ahead by eight (32-24).

Edinboro played catch-up the rest of the half and outscored WSU 9-4 over the final 3:06 to close the gap to three (36-33) before intermission, with Hayley Sims scoring four points and Morgan Gentile three.  Wayne State shot 41 percent (12-of-29) from the field in the opening 20 minutes, which was just over EU's 40 percent (10-of-25).

Third Quarter
A quick 5-0 run by Edinboro between 9:06 and 8:36 on a Haddad layup and Gillian Fisher three-pointer tied the score at 38-38, after a Thompson layup had put the Warriors ahead by five.  The visitors posted the next six points between the 7:48 and 5:52 marks of the quarter to regain a 44-38 advantage.  A driving layup from redshirt senior guard Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) propelled the Green and Gold to a 46-40 lead at the media break.  A Ferguson triple with two second remaining not only put the freshman in double-figures, but also helped Wayne State outscore the Fighting Scots 11-7 over the final four minutes.

Fourth Quarter
Fugate made a layup within the first 20 seconds of the fourth to give the visitors their first 10-point lead of the game (57-47).  Ferguson then nailed another triple to tie her career-best 15 points and force Edinboro to call timeout, trailing 60-47.  Hope Garrity sank consecutive three-pointers off the bench to close the deficit to seven (60-53), but seven would be as close as Edinboro would come as the Warriors outpaced EU 18-14 over the final 6:39 to conclude an 11-point triumph.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 51 percent (28-of-55) from the field, while Edinboro went 22-of-53 (42 percent).  EU was better in both the three-point and free throw department, as the Fighting Scots drained 7-of-16 triples (44 percent) and 16-of-17 free throws (94 percent).  The Warriors were 4-of-14 (29 percent) from beyond the arc and 18-of-21 (86 percent) at the charity stripe.  The hosts had a slight edge in rebounds (31-30), but turned the ball over eight more times (25-17) than WSU.  The Green and Gold outpaced Edinboro 44-24 in the paint.
