SVSU takes home opener 5-2 over LTU

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team returned home, playing on campus for the first time since 2019, hosting Lawrence Tech Friday at the SVSU Tennis Complex.

After dropping the doubles point 2-1, the Cardinals took five of the six singles matches, including three decided in a third-set super tiebreaker. The 5-2 win moves SVSU to 2-1 overall this season.

LTU claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. The Cardinals picked up a victory in the No. 2 doubles with Chelsea Dzenga and Elizabeth Stuart earning a 7-5 win.

The Blue Devils captured a second point with a straight-set win at No. 1 singles, but the Cardinals ran the table the rest of the way. After dropping the first set 7-5, Dzenga rallied at No. 2 singles with a 6-2 win in the second and a 10-2 victory in the third. Nicole Johnson was pushed to a third set at No. 3, but prevailed 6-1, 4-6, 10-8.

At No. 4, Emma Charlton was also pushed to a third and deciding set before putting her opponent away 4-6, 6-2, 10-1. The Cardinals rolled at No. 5 with Andrea Teofilovic winning 6-4, 6-1, and at No. 6, as Stuart cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory.

The Cardinals play a scrimmage against Northwood University at 1 pm Saturday and return to regular competition against Cornerstone University at 11 am on Saturday, Oct. 2. Both matches will take place at the SVSU Tennis Complex.
