Cardinals Improve to 4-2 in GLIAC with 12-Point Win Over Davenport

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team rolled Davenport in a 77-65 win on the road to improve to 4-2 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Thursday night. Tre Garrett was 8-11 from the floor to lead the Cardinals with 24 points, eight rebounds, and seven steals.

Freddie McIntosh tallied 16 points, three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Kevonne Taylor recorded 11 points while being active in the paint, with three blocks and three rebounds. Maurice Barnett registered 12 points off the bench for SVSU in the winning effort. Chansey Willis Jr. scored nine points and had eight rebounds and eight assists on the night.

Tre Garrett hit a three-point jumper to tie the game and spark a 7-0 run that gave the Cardinals a 10-6 lead in the opening four minutes of play. Davenport tied things at 10 before SVSU responded with four-straight points to retake the advantage. The Panthers tied things up at 18 with 10:39 left in the first half. Garrett hit a pull-up jumper to ignite a 9-0 run and create the game's first double-digit lead, 30-20, with just over seven minutes remaining. The lead grew to 18, but Davenport cut the lead to 47-34 when the teams entered the locker room at the break.

Layups by Willis Jr., Garrett, and Barnett made up most of a 7-0 run that pushed the Cardinal lead to 18 with 14 minutes left in regulation. Garrett made both free throws to give SVSU its largest lead of the game of 19 points with 4:36 on the clock. The Cardinals held out through the remainder of the game to earn the double-digit win.
