Golden Bears stun unbeaten Panthers in overtime

Keating secures the game-winner in overtime

MELBOURNE, Fla. - After a pair of losses to top-10 opponents earlier in the week on their spring trip to Florida, #14 Concordia-St. Paul (5-2) scored a big 11-10 overtime win at Florida Tech (5-1) on Thursday night at Panther Stadium.

Sophomore Mary Keating scored the game-winner with 1:50 to play in overtime to secure the victory in a game that featured eight ties and three lead changes with neither team leading by more than two goals throughout.

It was a big win for the Golden Bears, ranked #14 in the Nike/US Lacrosse Division II Top-20 while Florida Tech was receiving votes in the poll for the second straight week. The Panthers had also improved to 5-0 with a Tuesday night win over Regis who is ranked #6 by the IWLCA and #5 by Nike/US Lacrosse.

After playing three games in five days, Concordia will get a break before Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference (GLIAC) play starts on Sunday, March 15 at 11 a.m. against Northern Michigan at the Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium.

In tonight's game, CSP fell behind 2-0 in the first three and a half minutes but scored three in a row with three different players netting goals and three different players assisting for a 3-2 lead at 20:40 of the first half.

The Panthers responded by shutting CSP out the rest of the first half and going on a 3-0 run of their own for a 5-3 halftime advantage.

At the break, Concordia was uncharacteristically down 6-3 on the draw which allowed the Panthers to hold a slight 15-11 shot advantage. Senior goalie Katie Lottsfeldt answered the call with six saves while Florida Tech goalie Chloe Zador had just three.

In the second half, Concordia returned to its typical dominance of the draw by securing a 10-3 advantage, flipping the shot margin 14-10 in its favor.

CSP started the second half with the first two goals to tie the game at 5-5 with 25:19 to go. From there, the teams traded goals back-and-forth until it was 9-9 with 4:25 to play following a goal by senior Maddie Hentges.

With just over three minutes to play, Sara McNicoll put CSP back on top for the first time since the 3-2 lead at 20:40 of the first half on a pass from Hentges for a 10-9 lead.

The Panthers responded with a goal at 1:19, with Concordia winning the draw and holding the right to play for the last shot, with Lex Seifert's attempt at five seconds left going wide of the cage.

In overtime, CSP once again took control by winning the draw, although the Golden Bears turned it over a minute into overtime. With 46 seconds to play, the Panthers missed wide on a free position shot with CSP getting one more shot before the first three minutes of overtime expiring, with Pierson denied by Zador with 23 seconds left.

Following the teams changing sides in overtime, CSP once again captured the draw to win 12 of the final 15 draw controls. It set up Keating's goal 70 seconds later for the victory, her second goal of the game.

In the final tally, CSP held a 27-26 shot margin, 15-9 edge in draw controls and a slight lead in clears with 16-of-17 to Florida Tech's 15-of-17. Each team had eight saves, while CSP was 3-of-5 on free position shots and Florida Tech was 2-of-9. The Panthers had the edge in ground balls (20-16) and committed five fewer turnovers (19-14).

Lottsfeldt finished the game with eight saves and two ground balls in 70:10 of playing time while Zador also went the distance in net with eight saves with three ground balls and one caused turnover.

Keating was one of four Golden Bears with a two goal game, joined by Pierson, Alina Boyce and Katie Moynihan while Lex Seifert had a pair of assists. McNicoll and Hentges each had two points with a goal and an assist, as well. Once again, nine different Golden Bears factored into the scoring.

Pierson (7) and Lexi Stanley (6) accounted for 13 of the team's 15 draw controls, with Stanley adding two ground balls and a caused turnover with Keating producing a team-best four ground balls.

The Panthers were led by Alexis Townsend's five points coming off of a game-high four goals while Kailee O'Brien had four ground balls, four draw controls, four caused turnovers, a goal and an assist.
