Laker Women's Tennis Fall to Bulldogs 6-1

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's tennis program (1-13, 0-6 GLIAC) fell to the Ferris State Bulldogs (8-10, 2-4 GLIAC) by a final score of 6-1 on Friday.

The Bulldogs were able to get off to a quick start in doubles play, claiming a victory at the No. 2 spot, and they would ultimately take the doubles point with a 6-3 win in the No. 1 doubles match. Martina Oviedo (Cordoba, Argentina) and Riley Gilman (Holt, Mich.) pushed their opponents to the brink with a valiant effort at the No. 3 doubles match, but Ferris State would narrowly take the match by a score of 7-5.

Julia Fraile Raton (Sant Cugat del Valles) would get the Lakers on the board in singles play after coming back from down 2-5 in her opening set on her way to a 7-5, 6-3 victory in the No. 3 singles match. However, Ferris State was able to take the remaining five singles matches to claim the match overall by a score of 6-1.

Despite the loss, the Lakers would still prove to be competitive in several matches, individually. Valentina Parodi (Albissola Marina, Italy) had a strong opening set, only dropping it 5-7, and Oviedo won her opening set by a score of 7-5 before falling in a highly competitive 5-7, 6-4, [10-3]. 

The Lakers will conclude the regular season on Saturday, April 15 when they host the Grand Valley State Lakers with the first serve scheduled for 10 a.m.
