Men's Tennis Collects Home Win Versus Lake Superior State

WSU won seven of the nine matches between singles and doubles.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team (15-4 overall, 3-0 GLIAC) pushed its winning streak to four games by defeating Lake Superior State (3-9 overall, 0-3 GLIAC) 6-1 on Friday afternoon.

SINGLES
The Warriors were strong in singles, winning five of the six matches.  Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) was strong at No. 3 singles, earning a 6-2, 6-0 victory.

Ben Lakeman (Penzance Cornwall, England) recorded a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles.

Playing at No. 4 singles, Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) made quick work of his opponent, posting a 6-2, 6-1 win.  Grey received the team's game ball, which is given to the player who competed the best throughout the match.

Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) defeated his opponent 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.

The final singles victory came from Luke Laws (Sunderland, England).  He won, 7-6 (2), 6-1, at No. 6 singles.

Dom Spicer (London, England) was upended in a three-set battle at No. 1 singles, 6-7 (2), 6-4, 4-10.

DOUBLES
Laws and Spicer got things going early with a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles.

Karcz and Lakeman fell 4-6 at No. 3 doubles, making the final match important.

Drenth and Grey were able to edge the Lakers' top pair, 6-4.

FROM COACH MORROW
"It was exciting and fun to be on campus for the first time this year.  Lake Superior State is a solid team in the GLIAC.  They came and played a strong match against us.  The doubles point, I thought, was in question.  They pulled out a nice win at No. 3 doubles.  We played solid at No. 2 doubles.  No. 1 doubles was a serving battle.  Fortunately we were able to get the one break in the match and get the doubles point," coach Bryan Morrow said.

"We moved Ben Lakeman up to No. 2 for the first time this year, and he responded nicely with a nice win.  Niklas (Karcz), once he really got into his groove in the second set, he didn't give his guy much of a chance.  Daniel (Grey) got the player of the day ball for the guy who really showed the most focus and was really dialed in.  Cedric (Drenth) played a really nice match at No. 5.  For Cedric and Luke (Laws), having to wait to play is hard.  When you take the court and the match is already over, mentally that's also difficult.  They both did a good job."

UP NEXT
The Warriors will be back on the court tomorrow at home against Michigan Tech.  The match is set for 10:00 AM.
