Baseball opens the season with 18-7 victory over Augusta

ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Cardinal Baseball team opened its 2020 season on the road Friday (Feb. 14) in South Carolina, facing Augusta University. Saginaw Valley had a stellar opener, recording 13 hits, seven of which went for extra-bases, in an 18-7 win over the Jags. 

SV had single runs in the 1st and 4th innings to take a 2-0 lead before Augusta scored a single run in the top of the 5th to make the score 2-1 in the Cardinals' edge.

The Cards ended up scoring five runs in three straight innings, going for that number in the home half of the 5th, 6th and 7th innings, respectively, to take a 17-3 lead.

After the Jags scored four runs in the top of the 8th but Saginaw Valley responded with a single run in the bottom of the 8th to make the score 18-7. 

Inside the Boxscore

  • SVSU had seven extra-base hits, with three of those being home runs.
  • Joshua Riggs, Collin Winters and Tucker Roe each had a home run in the contest. It was Roe's first of his career in the victory.
  • Riggs finished 3-4 with the home run, two doubles and four RBI.
  • Winters had four RBI as well with the home run and scored three times.
  • Brandon Scheurer had two hits with a pair of RBI and scored three times as well.
  • Thomas Loftus had two hits with a two RBI.
  • Austin Koin had multiple hits, going 2-4 with two runs.
  • Andrew Burke added a double with two RBI and scored twice. 

On the Mound

  • Brandon Wise (1-0) got the start for SV, going 5.0 innings for the victory. He allowed two earned runs on six hits, striking-out four and allowing four walks. 
  • Ryan Steinhauer had two innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts. 
  • Matt Montroy worked a scoreless 9th inning with a strikeout.
