Offense Sputters in Loss to Hillsdale

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (27-13) and former GLIAC member Hillsdale (19-21) met for a non-conferene affair on Tuesday at Harwell Field, which was won 6-4 by the visiting Chargers.  The Warriors led early 2-0 but the offense could only muster two hits against seven Hillsdale hurlers.  It is the second time HC has topped WSU this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
WSU scored twice in the bottom of the first inning without recording a base hit.  It started with a leadoff walk to Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) before an error allowed Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) to reach.  Another walk prior to a wild pitch allowed the first run of the game to score and an RBI groundout from Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) made it 2-0.

Two straight hits to start the top of the fifth inning including an RBI triple gave the Chargers their first run of the afternoon.  Following an intentional walk, a three-run home run from Jeff Landis put HC on top 4-2.

DeLanoy homered deep to right field with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, trimming the deficit to one, 4-3.

Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) walked to start the bottom of the sixth inning and advanced to second base after a failed pickoff attempt.  After tagging up to third on a fly out, a MacLean single to right tied the game at 4-4.

A throwing error after a strikeout allowed the leadoff batter to reach and then Hillsdale used a two-run home run from Danny Passinault put the Charges on top 6-4.

AT THE PLATE
MacLean went 1-for-4 with two RBI.

ON THE MOUND
Jimmy Love (Birmingham, Mich. / Seaholm) started and worked around three walks to not allow a run in two and 1/3 innings.  Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) (3-1) gave up six runs (five earned) in four and 2/3 innings with five strikeouts.

David Thurman (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Edison) worked the final two innings and was effective, not allowing a run.
