Volleyball Stays Unbeaten in the GLIAC

Three Warriors posted at least 10 kills on Saturday.

HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (10-2 overall, 4-0 GLIAC) won at Purdue Northwest (1-9 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) in three sets on Saturday afternoon.  The Warriors won by scores of 25-23, 25-18 and 25-18.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A service ace from Julia Malewicz (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Academy for International Studies / Henry Ford II) gave WSU a 4-2 lead early in the first set.  However, the Pride would use a 5-0 run later in the set to take a 13-7 advantage.  With the score at 14-8, the Green & Gold won 10 consecutive points, including three kills from Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.), giving WSU an 18-14 lead.  Purdue Northwestern would trim the deficit to 18-17 and 34-23 but another tally from VanderWal sealed the 25-23 set-one victory.

PNW led 4-3 to start the second set.  A block from Jenna Kray (Westerville, Ohio / Worthington Christian) and Alexa Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens) made it 8-5 before Wayne State pulled away to lead 14-7.  Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.) gave the visitors a 20-12 lead and she also collected the final point of the set as WSU won 25-18.

Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) used an ace early in the third set to put the Warriors on top 4-0 prior to kills from Morrison and VanderWal pushed WSU to an 8-2 advantage.  Wayne State continued to control the tempo and led 14-5 following a spike by Kray.  Withun made it 19-10 with a point before WSU extended the margin to nine, 22-13.  The Pride made a late charge, pulling within four, 22-18, but an error, a kill by Keilyn Carpenter (Vermontville, Mich. / Maple Valley) and Kray wrapped up the set and match.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
A trio of Warriors posted at least 10 kills, led by VanderWal's 12.  Kray had 11 and Morrison had 10.  Duffield finished with 33 helpers and Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) anchored the defense with 15 digs.

IMPRESSIVE START
The 4-0 league record is the best since WSU began the 2017 GLIAC campaign 4-0.  The 10-2 overall mark is the best start since the Warriors went 10-1 in 2009.

HEAD COACH THOUGHTS
""It's very difficult to get a road weekend sweep in the GLIAC, and we were very fortunate to do that this weekend," said head coach Tim Koth.  "Jenna was unbelievable, and Maddie Morrison came in and played a great match today."

UP NEXT
Wayne State will stay on the road and play at Michigan Tech on Friday night in Houghton.
