Women's Basketball Secures Victory vs. Northwood After Second-Half Comeback

Four Warriors scored in double figures.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (11-8 overall, 5-6 GLIAC) notched a 68-59 home court victory over Northwood University (4-15 overall, 2-9 GLIAC) at the Matthaei on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Junior Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) made a bucket within the first four seconds of play, but the Timberwolves scored four straight points for a 4-2 lead.  Senior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) tied the score with a jumper at the 7:52 mark.  While the Green and Gold went cold for 2:56, NU tallied seven consecutive points for an 11-4 advantage.  Sophomore Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) ended the WSU scoring drought with a layup, however, Northwood answered with a five-point run.  Senior Sadia Johnson (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Central) was the next Warrior to score with a pair of free throws at the 1:47 mark, cutting the deficit to eight points (16-8).  NU's Adele Kemp scored from long distance with 1:18 on the clock, but freshman Mercedes Wagner (Sherwood, Ohio / Fairview) quickly responded with a conventional three-point play.  Over the final 65 seconds of the opening stanza, the Timberwolves made two foul shots before sophomore Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) drained a three pointer to cut the Warrior deficit to seven (21-14).

Over the initial 7:29 of the second stanza, the Warriors were limited to only three free throws while Northwood scored nine points to lead 30-17.  The Timberwolves 13-point margin would be its largest lead of the contest.  Sophomore Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) was the first Green and Gold player to make a field goal in the second quarter with 2:30 on the clock.  Including Cherney's bucket, WSU would tally the final five points of the half, but still trailed 30-22 at intermission.

After a layup by NU's Jayla Strickland opened the second half scoring, the Green and Gold went on an 11-point run over the next 6:27.  Cherney totaled seven of WSU's 11 points during the spurt, including an old-fashioned three-point play to turn a 32-30 deficit into a 33-32 advantage.  Wayne State's first lead since the opening seconds of the contest was short lived as Northwood's Kenzie Seeley made a pair of free throws just 50 seconds later.  In back-and-forth action during a span of 1:36, there were four lead changes.  A pair of foul shots by senior Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) would secure the WSU lead at the 2:20 mark.  Johnson scored in the paint with 2:02 left in the stanza, followed by a point from the charity stripe by Sherwood to give the Warriors a four-point lead (40-36).  Timberwolf Ellie Taylor tallied a point from the foul line, before Johnson concluded third-quarter scoring with a basket at the 1:16 mark.  Wayne State led 42-37 with one period left.

Northwood scored the first point of the final stanza from the charity stripe.  Perez was the first Warrior to score in the quarter, making back-to-back layups for a 46-38 advantage, but NU responded with its own two buckets.  Sherwood made a conventional three-point play at the 7:17 mark before the Timberwolves Sophia DeMilia drained a bucket from beyond the arc to trim WSU's lead to six points (51-45).  George tallied a free throw at the 6:56 mark before the teams exchanged layups.  Johnson tacked on an extra point for a 55-47 lead before Northwood's Alli Keyser recorded two points from the charity stripe.  A six-point spurt extended the Green and Gold advantage to 61-49 with George scoring four of the six points.  NU cut its deficit to six points after outscoring Wayne State 7-1 during the next 1:53.  Back-to-back layups by Cherney, followed by a Sherwood free throw, gave the Warriors an 11-point lead (67-56) with 44 seconds left.  A three pointer by Keyser would be the visiting team's final bucket of the contest.  Sophomore Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) topped off WSU's scoring with a point from the charity stripe.  The Green and Gold defeated visiting Northwood 68-59.
