Softball Swept by Grand Valley State

The Malone University softball team lost at Grand Valley State University (MI) by the final scores of 5-0 and 6-1 on Friday afternoon.

The Pioneers will travel to Big Rapids, Michigan to face Ferris State University on Saturday, April 23rd at 1:00 p.m.

Game One Recap:

The Lakers notched three hits and four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a convincing 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third inning, third baseman Shannon Flaherty slammed a solo homer to increase Grand Valley State's lead to 5-0.

The Pioneers' defense held their own the rest of the game, but their offense couldn't get anything rolling, giving the hosts the 5-0 victory.

Mikayla Fowler, Alexa Holztrager, and Emily Isla all tallied a hit, while pitcher Kari Hall went the distance and registered three strikeouts.

Game Two Recap:

After the Pioneer defense collected two quick outs to start the first inning, the Lakers' offense then notched two single hits and a double which resulted in two runs scored to take the early 2-0 lead.

Grand Valley State's next run came in the top of the second inning when Janae Langs grounded out to the shortstop, allowing Kelsey Dominguez to score, making it 3-0.

In the top of the fifth inning, Shannon Flaherty tallied the RBI single to extend the Lakers' lead to 4-0.

Malone's offense broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning when designated hitter Abbie Hughes grounded out to the second baseman, allowing Fowler to collect the run scored to make it 4-1.

The last two runs for the Lakers came in the top of the seventh inning, increasing their lead to 6-1.

Malone wasn't able to add any more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, falling 6-1 at Grand Valley State.

Emily and Ashley Beck, and Fowler each registered a hit, while Hughes generated one RBI.

Hall went the distance again and recorded four strikeouts.
