Volleyball Drops Road Match at Grand Valley

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State volleyball team fell to the Grand Valley State Lakers in a  Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match on Friday, Oct. 22 by a final score of 3-0. With the defeat, the Lakers drop to 2-6 in conference competition this season after losing the match by scores of 25-23, 25-14 and 25-22. 

In the first set, the LSSU Lakers built an early 7-5 lead over GVSU with senior Bethany WIlson recording two kills. Grand Valley responded with five straight points (10-7) and later in the set, the score was tied at 16. The set remained evenly matched between the two Laker teams as the score was tied at 19 after LSSU scored three straight points. The set ended with Grand Valley recording the final two kills to clinch the first set by a score of 25-23. 

The second set opened with the two teams tied at four but then the home squad went on a run of four straight points to take an 8-4. With Lake State trailing 11-10,  Grand Valley went on a seven point run to build an 18-10 lead. The second set ended with Grand Valley winning by a score of 25-14. 

In the third set, Grand Valley built an 8-4 lead but LSSU would come back within a point (9-8). With Grand Valley leading 19-13, the LSSU Lakers began a late comeback. GVSU led 23-16 and the Lakers, led by Emily Hagelthorn's serving, would make it a 24-22 game. Grand Valley sealed the three-set win by a score of 25-22.

Stat Leaders: Junior Taylor Fleming led the Lakers with 10 kills in the match while Camdyn Odykirk and Bethany Wilson tied for second on the team with seven kills apiece. Fleming's .304 hitting percentage also led the Lakers while Odykirk's .263 ranked second. Emily Kalinowski recorded 20 of the team's 25 assists.

Defensively, the Lakers were led by their libero Hagelthorn who posted a team-leading 20 digs in the match. Freshman Ally Lasley ranked second on the team with seven digs.

The Lakers will continue their three-match weekend on the road tomorrow afternoon as the team takes on the Davenport Panthers at 2:00 p.m. The match is set to take place at the Davenport Student Center in Grand Rapids, Mich.
