UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team earned its second home sweep of the season, taking two on Senior Day from Ferris State University Sunday at the SVSU Softball Complex.

Emily Depew, who was one day removed from her first career no-hitter, twirled another gem in game one as the Cardinals shut out the Bulldogs 4-0. SVSU scored three in the first and three in the fourth, holding off Ferris State for a 7-4 win in the finale.

The sweep moves SVSU to 21-12 overall and 10-10 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

In a ceremony following game one, the Cardinals honored five student-athletes, including 2021 seniors Shelby Misiak, Kasey Bagelmann, and Sabrina Sage, while Morgan Duda and Mikayla Alexandrou were also honored as members of the class of 2020.

In game one, SVSU got on the board early with an RBI double from Leah Denome in the first. After Sarah Gersch stole home in the third to make it 2-0, the Cardinals went up three with an RBI single from Sara Moos. Sage added an insurance run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly RBI.

Depew improved to 6-1 on the season, tossing seven innings, allowing no runs on four hits and one walk, striking out 10.

SVSU built an early lead with three runs in the first in game two. Julia Salisbury drove home the first of the game with an RBI single, followed by a two-run double off the bat of Meagan VerVaecke. Ferris State cut the deficit to one with a pair of runs in the fourth but the Cardinals answered in the bottom of the inning.

Paige Kolinski hit a solo home run to centerfield, followed by RBIs from Sarah Gersch and Salisbury. Gersch added another RBI on a single in the fifth.

Julia Mundy (7-4) got the start on the mound, going 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, and striking out four in the win. Alyssa Muench (1) earned the save with 2.2 hitless innings for SVSU, striking out four.

The Cardinals hit the road for a doubleheader at Ashland University starting at 3 pm Tuesday in Ashland, Ohio.
