Baseball Sweeps Opening Day Doubleheader

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Wayne State university baseball team (2-0 overall) started its season with a pair of wins over Webber International (17-9 overall) on Wednesday night.  The Warriors won game one 3-0 before completing the doubleheader sweep in game two by winning 2-0.  The Warriors did not allow a hit in game two.

GAME ONE (W, 3-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED

After a leadoff walk and a single, graduate starter Dillon McInerney (Richmond, Mich.) (1-0) used a 6-4-3 double play to escape any early damage.  With two outs in the bottom of the first, Wayne State used a single from redshirt junior Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) and an RBI double by graduate Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) to take an early 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, senior Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) started the frame with a single into center field and moved to second base on a wild pitch.  He moved to third base on an error and later scored on an RBI groundout by DeLanoy.  Junior Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) doubled with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning and then junior pinch-runner Jacob Badalamenti (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Warren De La Salle) would eventually score on a wild pitch to push the advantage to 3-0.

AT THE PLATE
Ramirez led the lineup with two hits and six different Warriors tallied knocks.

ON THE MOUND
McInerney blanked WIU over six innings before junior Chad Sommers (Jonesville, Mich.) worked the final frame to earn a save.  McInerney struck out seven batters, walked two and allowed three hits.  Sommers posted one strikeout in his inning of action.

GAME TWO (W, 2-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED

Senior Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) dominated early, holding Webber hitless over four innings.  Redshirt junior Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) sent a one-out single into right center in the top of the sixth inning.  The promising rally continued with a DeLanoy single through the right side and an error allowed two runs to score and give the Green & Gold a 2-0 lead.

AT THE PLATE
Foley went 2-for-3 with a run scored

ON THE MOUND
Cox did not allow a hit over four and 2/3 innings, while striking out five batters and walking one. Redshirt senior Jack Schmidt (Fishers, Ind. / Indianapolis Cathedral) (1-0) earned the win in relief after throwing two and 1/3 innings where he did not allow a baserunner.  The last no-hitter thrown by the Warriors was on March 2, 2019 at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.  Tyler Waldrop retired 15 of the 16 Triton batters, before Brandon Williams and Josh Nelson each pitched a hitless inning of relief.  Nick Cowen (2/3 inning) and Matt Krutsch (1/3 inning) combined for a 1-2-3 eighth inning, while Jack Schmidt struck out two of the four batters he faced in a hitless ninth inning.

UP NEXT
The Green & Gold are scheduled to meet Saginaw Valley State on Thursday at 1:00 PM in a non-GLIAC contest.
