Volleyball Falls at Davenport to Finish Weekend

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (7-5, 1-3 GLIAC) lost in three sets at Davenport (9-4, 2-2 GLIAC) on Saturday night.  T.e Warriors lost by scores of 25-20, 25-19 and 25-12.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Green & Gold led 6-5 following a point by Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.) early in the first set.  A kill by Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.)
 and a DU error made it 10-8 in favor of the Warriors.  After WSU led 13-12, the Panthers responded by taking an 18-15 advantage.  A kill by Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) and a service ace from Kendyl Andrews (Flushing, Mich.) brought Wayne State within one, 19-18.  The home team won six of the last eight points to win 25-20.

A combo block by Shell and Morrison put WSU on top 6-4 to start the second set.  Both sides traded points until a DU error trimmed its lead to 13-12 but a 4-1 run by the Panthers made it 17-13.  Davenport would go on to win 25-19.

The Panthers won the first six points of thee third set and eventually led 10-3.  DU controlled the rest of the set and led 15-4 and 19-8 before the Panthers completed the sweep by winning 25-12.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
VanderWal had a team-high six kills, while Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) finished with 19 assists.  Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) totaled 18 digs.

UP NEXT
The Warriors will play five straight at home starting on Tuesday against Saginaw Valley State at 7:00 PM.
