Laker Tennis Falls to Hillsdale in Nonconference Match

HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State University men's and women's tennis teams competed against the Hillsdale College Chargers on Saturday, March 5 in Hillsdale, Mich. in a pair of nonconference matches. Both Laker teams fell by final scores of 4-3 to the Chargers. 

The men's team dropped the doubles point after winning one of the three matches. The third pairing of Diego Penz and Xavier Vicent Navarro won by a score of 6-2 while the top pair of Juho Kantola and Harris Rehan lost by a 6-4 score and the No. 2 pair of Krishan Taneja and Aaron Osmond fell by a 6-2 score in their match. 

In singles play, Kantola, the Lakers No. 1 player, fell in two sets by scores of 6-0 and 6-2. After falling in the first set by a score of 6-2, Vicent Navarro won in a decisive third set in the No. 2 singles match. The Laker player won in the second set in a tiebreaker by a score of 7-6 and clinched the third set by an 11-9 score. No. 3 Taneja and No. 4 Rehan both fell in two sets to their Charger opponents. Osmond won in two sets (6-1, 7-6) in the No. 5 singles match and Penz also won the No. 6 match in two sets (6-4, 6-1). 

The women's team fell in all three doubles matches to the Chargers as Hillsdale took the doubles point against the Lakers. The Lakers top pair of Milena Baigorria and Nadege Koua fell by score of 6-2, the team's No. 2 pair of Muskaan Ranjan and Maddie Whip fell by a 6-3 mark and the third pair of Keegan Malpass and Claudia Sole fell by a 6-4 final score. 

In singles play, Koua fell in two sets in the No. 1 singles match by scores of 6-1 and 6-2 and Ranjan, who played in the No. 2 singles match, also fell in two sets (6-2, 6-4). Sole won the No. 3 singles match in three sets as she won the opening set by a 6-4 score and responded to a 6-1 loss in the second set with a 6-1 win in the third and decisive set. Whip also won her match in three sets (6-2, 1-6, 6-2) over her Charger opponent in the No. 4 singles match. In the No. 5 singles match, Malpass fell in two sets (6-0, 7-6). Fraile Raton, playing in the No. 6 singles match, won in three sets. After falling by a score of 6-2 in the first set, Fraile Raton came back to win the second set by a 6-4 score and clinched the three-set win by a 10-7 score.

The Lakers will head to Head Hilton Island, S.C. next week for the team's annual spring break trip as they compete in the Professional Tennis Registry's Spring Tennis Fest.
