Volleyball Defeated by Wayne State in First GLIAC Match of the Season

DETROIT, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's volleyball team fell to the Wayne State Warriors by a final score of 3-0 on Friday, Sept. 17 in the first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match of the season. The Lakers overall record drops to 0-9 on the season after falling by scores of 25-16, 25-17, and 25-20.

The Warriors, who improved to 7-2 this season with the win over the Lakers, built an early 10-5 lead over LSSU in the first set. The Lakers tallied three straight points to pull within a pair of Wayne State (10-8) but were unable to even the score in the rest of the set. The Warriors secured the opening set by a score of 25-16. 

In the second set, the two conference opponents played to an early 4-4 tie. The Warriors responded with a run of six straight points to take a 10-4 lead. But, the Lakers would answer back and score four of the set's next five points to cut the deficit to three points (11-8). However, Wayne State's offense would control the rest of the set, and the Warriors would take the second set by a 25-17 score. 

The third set would begin with even play between the Lakers and Warriors. The Lakers trailed by two points (8-6) through 14 points of play before the Warriors would extend their lead. Wayne State held a 20-12 advantage late in the set. With the Warriors at match point, the Lakers went on a run of five consecutive points, including a pair of aces by freshman Ally Lasley, to keep the set alive. The Warriors would clinch the third set victory by a score of 25-20 to take the GLIAC match. 

Stat Leaders: Junior Taylor Fleming led the Lakers with 10 kills in the set, as she posted her third consecutive double-digit kill total. Senior Camdyn Odykirk posted eight kills against the Warriors to rank second among her teammates in the match. Odykirk's .375 hitting percentage in the match led the team. Setter Halle Grulke recorded 27 of the team's 30 assists in the match, and she has moved into 10th place all-time in Laker history in career assists (1,290). 

Ally Gruber, who has had a strong start to the year for the Lakers, rounded out the top three with nine kills against Colo. Christian. Emily Kalinowski led the Lakers with 22 assists. 

Sophomore libero Emily Hagelthorn totaled 15 digs to lead the Lakers in the defensive category.

The Lakers will wrap up the first weekend of conference play tomorrow afternoon as they take on the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals at 2:00 p.m. in a road match.
