Women's Basketball Drops GLIAC Opener to No. 6 Ashland

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team dropped its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) game by a final score of 85-55 to the No. 6 Ashland University Eagles on Thursday, Dec. 5 at the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. Through the first six games of the 2019-20 season, the Lakers hold a 3-3 overall record and 0-1 in conference play. 

In the first quarter of play, the score between the Lakers and Eagles remained tight through the first five minutes of play as Ashland led by two points (10-8). The Eagles offense was strong through the final five minutes of the first quarter as Ashland led 25-12 heading into the second quarter. 

Ashland would control the game through the second quarter as well as the Eagles outscored the Lakers 23-13 to go ahead by 48-25 at the half. The game's second half saw Ashland build onto its lead as the Eagles would hold a 37-30 scoring advantage in the final two quarters. 

The Lakers were led by junior Rebecca Villanueva as she posted a team-leading 14 points in the game. Villanueva went six-for-seven on free throw attempts while adding three rebounds. Ella Bontrager (five points) and Morgan Villemure (seven points) rounded out the strong game for the Lakers bench as they recorded 28 of the Lakers total points in the game. Freshman Mattison Rayman led the Lakers with four rebounds as she competed in her first career conference game.

The Lakers will cap off the first pair of GLIAC games on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 1:00 p.m. against Wayne State in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
