Women's Basketball claims 85-77 home victory over Huskies

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Cardinal Women's Basketball team was impressive on Saturday (Feb. 1) at home against Michigan Tech, defeating the Huskies by a final score of 85-77. SVSU bounced-back from a first quarter deficit to claim the victory over Michigan Tech, securing the first regular season sweep over Tech since the 1990 season.

The victory moves SVSU to 9-12 overall on the season and 5-8 in the GLIAC. Tech falls to 7-13 and 5-8 in league play. 

Michigan Tech started with a 16-12 edge over the Cardinals after 10 minutes of play. Saginaw Valley bounced-back in the second, posting a 24-20 advantage in the second quarter. Maddie Maloney went coast-to-coast and made a layup just before the buzzer to send the teams to the halftime break tied 36-36.

Saginaw Valley got a big third quarter from Kaitlyn Zarycki, who scored 13 of its 22 points and the home team held the Huskies to 13 in the frame to carry a 58-49 lead into the fourth. 

Both teams had high-scoring outputs in the fourth quarter, with Tech narrowly outscoring the Cardinals 28-27. Zarycki added eight more in the fourth and Tori DePerry added seven in helping SVSU seal the 85-77 victory.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Zarycki finished with a game-high 25 points, adding four rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block. 
  • Maddie Barrie added 18 points with three rebounds. 
  • DePerry had 14 points with five boards, a steal and a block. 
  • Maloney had a dozen points with five rebounds and eight assists while earning Meijer "Player of the Game" honors. Her eight assists matched her career-high, which was set earlier this season at Findlay. 
  • Mariah Cook had another solid game, tallying nine points, seven rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals. 
  • The Cards did work on the glass, out-rebounding the Huskies 36-22.
