FINDLAY, Ohio -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (7-11, 3-6 GLIAC) concluded its weekend at Findlay (14-3, 8-1 GLIAC) on Saturday and the Oilers won the match in three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-18 and 25-19.
HOW IT HAPPENED- Findlay went on top 10-4 and continued its 9-1 run to extend the lead to 12-4 to begin the first set. After an ace from
Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) and a kill from
Mikayla Shell (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) the Warriors trimmed the deficit to four at 16-12. However, UF was able to win the race to 20 and led 20-14. WSU would not go away and pulled within three at 20-17 after a combo block from
Maddison Smith (Melbourne, Australia) and
Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) and a Moore kill. Once again, Findlay was able to regain control and would win set one 25-18.
- The Oilers opened the second set on a 10-4 run and would eventually lead 18-10.
Kelsey Bonewits (Griffith, Ind.) cut the deficit to five at 20-15 with a kill but the Oilers secured a 2-0 match lead with a 25-18 win.
- The third set was tied at 6-6 after a kill from
Emily Norscia (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill) and an ace from
Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron). UF led 10-9 and would not relinquish its lead the rest of the way and capture the sweep with a 25-19 set-three victory.
LEADING THE WARRIORS- Norscia led WSU with eight kills on 13 swings. Moore tallied seven kills on 25 swings.
- Smith finished with 25 assists while
Haley Tenelshof (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Jenison) helped the defense with a team-high seven digs.
UP NEXT- WSU will participate in the Midwest Regional Crossover in Aurora, Ill. beginning on Friday. The Warriors will play three GLVC opponents starting with Bellarmine on Friday at 2:30 PM. WSU also plays Southern Indiana on Saturday at 10 AM and conclude the event against St. Joseph's on Saturday at 4 PM.
