Men's Tennis Falls 6-1 at Saint Leo

The Warriors played in their sixth all-ranked match of the season.

SAINT LEO, Fla. -- The 13th-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (9-6 overall) dropped a 6-1 decision to the second-ranked Saint Leo University (11-0 overall) on Saturday afternoon at the Saint Leo Tennis Center. 

DOUBLES
WSU started off the match on a high note, claiming the doubles point for the third straight contest in Florida. 

The fifth-ranked doubles pairing in the country of Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) pulled out a tie-breaking 7-6 (4) victory over the 28th-ranked doubles duo of Vincent Thiel and Ghali Mensour at the No. 1 spot.

Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Dom Spicer (London, England) were also winners, nabbing a 7-5 triumph over Ivan Marrero and Luis Iriarte at the No. 2 spot. 

The Warriors were unable to make a clean sweep of doubles happen, as Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and Joe Kelt (Ilkley, West Yorkshire, England) fell 6-4 at the No. 3 spot.

SINGLES
The Lions won all six singles matches to earn the home victory. 

Drenth was nearly shut-out at the No. 1 singles spot by Marrero, the 15th-ranked player in Division II singles.  The WSU sophomore fell 6-1, 6-0. 

Grey was upended by the 27th-ranked singles player Martin Soukal, dropping a 6-3, 6-2 decision at the No. 2 spot. 

At No. 3, Spicer lost by matching 6-2 scores to Thiel, the 22nd-ranked player. 

Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) played at the No. 4 spot and fell, 6-4, 6-3, to Nicolas Bacella. 

Mensour received the victory for Saint Leo at the No. 5 spot against Laws, as the Green and Gold redshirt junior was defeated 6-3, 7-5 in straight sets.

Finally, Kelt lost at the No. 6 spot to Iriarte, 6-1, 6-2.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will battle Embry-Riddle on Sunday in Daytona Beach, Fla.  The two teams will renew acquaintances after facing each other in the NCAA Championships last season, where the Warriors advanced with a 4-3 victory.  The match is set to start at 12 p.m.
