Lake Erie Too Much for Men's Basketball on Sunday

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (0-2 overall) were unable to rebound from a season-opening loss on Sunday afternoon against Lake Erie (1-1 overall) and fell 77-67.  

HOW IT HAPPENED
A jumper from Darian Owens-White (Ypsilanti, Mich. / River Rouge) gave the Warriors a 7-2 lead at the 16:35 mark.  Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) kept the home team on top 9-6 with a jumper as Wayne State stretched its margin to six, 14-8, with 12:21 left in the opening half after five quick points from Owens-White.  A put-back dunk from Tristan Wilson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) made it 17-13 in favor of the Green & Gold at the 10:56 mark.  Lake Erie used an 11-0 run to take a 23-17 lead with 6:48 left before halftime.  Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) knocked down a three-pointer at thr 5:43 mark to cut the deficit to three, 27-24.  A jumper by Javon Henderson (Detroit, Mich. / University Prep) brought WSU within one but the Storm controlled the remainder of the first stanza and went to the locker rooms with their largest lead of the day up to that point, 37-27.

Lake Erie continued to control the tempo and led 46-32 at the 17:38 mark of the second half.  WSU cut the margin to 10, 53-43, after two free throws from Wilson and Marshall followed with two more from the charity stripe to make it 53-45 at the 11:44 mark.  A fast break lay-up from Murray brought the Warriors within six, 53-47, with 11 minutes remaining in the contest.  Wilson's third block of the game led to a lay-up by the 6-9 senior center to make it 60-52 at the 7:04 mark.  Another fast break bucket from Murray trimmed the margin to six, 60-54, with 5:47 left in regulation.  The WSU offense went cold down the stretch as the Storm would go on to win their first game of the season, 77-67.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Owens-White led the Wayne State offense with 15 points, while both Marshall and Murray both tallied 14 points, while Xavier Cochran (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) finished with 10.  Murray also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.

LEADING THE STORM
Gabe Kynard posted a game-high 23 points, while Erron James, Brogan Scott and David Dunnigan also scored 11.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 41.8 percent from the floor, while Lake Erie finished with a 43.3 field goal percentage.  The Storm out-rebounded the Warriors 38-34 and used 30 second-chance points to spark the victory.  LEC was 75 percent from the free throw line, while WSU was just 65.2 percent from the line.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will host Lewis on Nov. 17th inside the Matthaei.  Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
