Women's Basketball Goes Overtime To Defeat SVSU, 70-62

Cherney and George combine for 42 points, 26 rebounds and five assists

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (12-5 overall, 8-4 GLIAC) knocked off second-place Saginaw Valley State University (12-5 overall, 7-3), 70-62 in overtime, Thursday evening at the Wayne State Fieldhouse.  It was the second consecutive close game between the squads, as the Cardinals won 69-67 at home on January 2nd, on a shot in the final second.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Senior guard Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on the game's opening possession.  SVSU tallied the next five points before a triple by senior Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) knotted the score at 5-5.  Saginaw Valley State grabbed an 8-5 on the first of two three-pointers in the period by Kaitlyn Zarycki.  WSU trimmed its deficit to one (8-7) on a lay-up by senior Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington), but the Cardinals scored eight of the next 10 points for a 16-9 advantage.  A late lay-up by SVSU's Victoria Stafford gave the hosts a 21-16 lead after 10 minutes.

Second Quarter
Saginaw Valley extended its margin to nine (25-16) making two buckets in the first 50 seconds of the stanza.  Over the next three minutes, the Warriors went on a 9-0 run, paced by four points from senior Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville), to even the score at 25-25.  The Cardinals responded with a 7-0 run and then pushed their lead to nine (36-27) with 2:28 left before intermission.  Both teams scored four points in the final 1:51 of the first half giving SVSU a 40-31 advantage at the break.

Third Quarter
The teams traded buckets (four for each squad) in the first 6:32, before Cherney completed an old-fashioned three-point play, but Saginaw Valley's Tori DePerry answered with a conventional three-point play.  The Cardinals lead was 11 (55-44) in the final minute of the period, before junior Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) scored on a driving lay-up and Cherney made a jumper in the final second cutting the Warrior deficit to seven (55-48) after 30 minutes.

Fourth Quarter
The Wayne State run eventually reached 13-0 as the Warriors scored the first nine points of the fourth stanza.  A Miller triple was followed by back-to-back lay-ups by George, and concluded with two free throws by Cherney.  A DePerry jumper at the 3:35 mark tied the game at 57-57, ending a scoring drought of over seven minutes by the Cardinals.  George made two foul shots with 99 seconds left, but SVSU's Maddie Barrie scored on a fast-break with just under a minute remaining.  Neither team scored in the final 57 seconds sending the contest into overtime.

Overtime
Neither team scored in the first 60 seconds of the extra session, before George converted two free throws with 3:51 on the clock.  She connected on both foul shots with 3:29 left extending the WSU advantage to four (63-59).  After Saginaw Valley missed its fourth consecutive field goal attempt in overtime, Sherwood was fouled and made both attempts for a 65-59 lead.  A missed triple try by Zarycki preceded two more free throws by Sherwood with 85 seconds remaining.  Maddie Maloney made a driving lay-up for SVSU with 1:16 left, before Cherney split a pair from the charity stripe with 47 seconds left.  DePerry made the second of two foul shots with 23 seconds left cutting the Warrior advantage to six (68-62).  Cherney made two free throws with 22 seconds left to seal the victory.
