Volleyball Sweeps LSSU

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (8-7 overall, 3-4 GLIAC) bested Lake Superior State (4-11 overall, 1-5 GLIAC) in straight sets on Saturday afternoon winning by scores of 26-24, 25-23 and 25-10.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The visiting Lakers led the first set 8-3 and 15-7 and forced Wayne State to use both of its timeouts to slow down the early momentum.  Lake Superior State led 18-13 before a 6-0 WSU rally gave the home side a 19-18 advantage.  Julia Malewicz (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Academy for International Studies / Henry Ford II) delivered the kill to put the Warriors on top.  However, LSSU responded and tied the set at 21-21 and rattled off three straight points to take a 24-23 lead.  Unfazed, Wayne State captured the final three points to win 26-24.  A kill from Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.)
and back-to-back points by Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) sealed the set-one win.

The second set was tied at 5-5 after an ace by Wagner. The Lakers led 11-8 and 13-11 before the margin grew to 16-12.  Wayne State was unable to get into a rhythm and trailed 20-16 before ending the set on a 9-3 run to win 25-23.  Malewicz and Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central) both picked a pair of kills down the stretch.

The Green & Gold won the first nine points of the third set and led 16-3 following a 4-0 run powered by points from Malewicz, Krenz, Wagner plus a combo block by Malewicz and Krenz.  A kill by Claire McWilliams (Muskegon, Mich. / Fruitport) and another point by VanderWal pushed WSU's lead to 20-5.  The Warriors would go onto win 25-10 on a kill by Summer Farris (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington).

LEADING THE WARRIORS
VanderWal tallied a game-high 14 kills on 30 swings, while Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) finished with 34 assists.  Malewicz had 10 digs and nine kills.

ONE BIG THING
Wayne State hit .354 for the match compared to LSSU's .158 hitting percentage.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH KOTH
"I was pleased with how the team worked through and rebounded after the touch match yesterday.  We started pretty slow but as the match progressed, we started to find our comfort level and rhythm. I thought Kamryn did a really nice job today of running the team."

UP NEXT
The Green & Gold will make a trip to the U.P. to meet Michigan Tech on Friday night and Northern Michigan on Saturday afternoon.
