Play of the Game - Larkin dunk from Phillips

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (13-3 overall, 12-1 GLIAC) went on a 15-0 run to start the second half and defeated visiting Grand Valley State (14-4 overall, 11-3 GLIAC) 62-56 Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei in a game televised on Xfinity channel 900.

The Warriors, who were ranked No. 22 in the nation this past week by the NABC, and the Lakers, who were No. 30 in the NABC poll, had three ties in the first three minutes of the game.  GVSU's largest lead of the contest was 5-2 following a jumper by Ricardo Carbajal and a triple by Ryan Sabin.

After a pair of free throws by junior guard Chene Phillips (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) put the Warriors ahead 10-8 at the 17:04 mark, neither squad were scored for the next 3:30 until Grand Valley's Tyrone Lee made a pair from the foul line to knot the game at 10.

Senior guard Cole Prophet (Sandusky, Ohio) split a pair from the charity stripe at the 12:01 mark to give WSU the lead for good.  Three minutes later junior forward Gerald Williams-Taylor (Flint, Mich./Northern) scored off a feed from Phillips, then on the ensuing possession for the Warriors senior forward Ian Larkin (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) made a pair of free throws pushing the lead to five (15-10) at the 8:15 mark.

GVSU pulled within one a couple of times (15-14, 18-17) in the final seven minutes before intermission but that would be as close as the Lakers would get.

During the aforementioned 15-0 run to start the second half (first 6:45), Grand Valley went 0-6 from the field, 0-3 from the foul line (fourth free throw attempt didn't happen because of a lane violation) along with three other turnovers.

Meanwhile, Larkin tallied six points on a pair of jumpers and a dunk of the first possession of the second half and Prophet added a fast break lay-up and a pair of free throws with junior forward Jamar Ragland (Detroit, Mich./Loyola) tallying five points.

Larkin answered GVSU's first points after halftime with another dunk pushing the lead to 19 (47-28) at the 12:06 mark.

The Lakers had a 9-2 run over the next four minutes to cut the Warrior advantage to 12 (49-37) with eight minutes left.

Wayne State's lead remained between eight and 13 until the final second when GVSU's Rob Woodson hit a triple to complete the scoring.

Larkin notched his third double-double of the season (and second in 48 hours) by recording a game-high 16 points along with a contest best 12 rebounds.  Williams-Taylor garnered his first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds with six of the boards coming on the offensive end.  Phillips chipped in with 14 points, while Prophet contributed nine points and four assists.

Tyrone Lee led three Lakers in double figures with 11 points.

WSU held a 41-27 edge in rebounding including 11 offensive rebounds compared to three offensive boards for GVSU which led to a 9-2 margin in second-chance points.  Even though the Warriors had one more turnover (12 to 11), the hosts had a 14-9 advantage in points off turnovers.

Wayne State will entertain Lake Superior next Saturday, Feb. 2 in a 1 p.m. tip at the Matthaei.
