Women's Tennis Defeats Saginaw Valley State in Home Return

The Warriors blank an opponent for the eighth time this season.

DETROIT -- The No. 13-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (16-3 overall, 4-1 GLIAC) played a home match for the first time since February 12, and the home-cooking helped lead WSU to a 7-0 victory over visiting Saginaw Valley State University (6-10 overall, 1-5 GLIAC) on Tuesday afternoon at the Duchene Athletic Facility.

DOUBLES
The Warriors claimed the doubles point by winning all three matches for the second time in the past three contests.

Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) and Shanice Weekes (London, England) won their sixth consecutive doubles match together with their 6-1 triumph at the No. 3 spot over Elizabeth Stuart and Irene Latorre Barreiro.

At the second flight, the point was officially earned when Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) claimed a 6-2 win against Amelia Dickson and Johanna Michahelles.

Not to be outdone, the top flight duo of Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) earned a 6-4 victory facing the top pairing for SVSU in Adriana Barrio Garcia De Leaniz and Tara Erler.  The No. 41-ranked team in the nation have played three consecutive doubles matches with a final mark of 6-4, with the two emerging victorious in two of the three.

SINGLES
The Warriors won 12 of the 13 sets in singles action for a near-sweep of the entire afternoon.

Gorgidze picked up matching 6-2 set victories to earn the second point for the Green and Gold.  She defeated Dickson at the fourth flight.

Next to finish was Ruyssen, the No. 25-ranked singles player.  She nabbed a 6-2, 6-3 win against Barrio Garcia at her usual top flight position.

Officially clinching the match for Wayne State was Arafat at the No. 3 spot with her 6-4, 6-2 triumph vs. Michahelles.

In the only battle of the day to go three sets, Komar pulled out a close victory against Erler at the second spot.  After winning the first set 6-2, the junior fell in the second set by a 6-4 margin.  In the 10-point tie-breaking set, the Warrior won the race to 10 (10-7) and captured her eighth dual match victory of the spring.

Two impressive freshmen also posted victories over their Cardinals opponents at the fifth and sixth flights.  Szpakowska improved to a still perfect 18-0 in dual matches this season with her near shutout of Calli Sokolowski.  She won, 6-1, 6-0.

Weekes was also a winner at the No. 6 spot, tallying a 6-4, 6-1 triumph against Stuart to wrap up the effort for WSU.
