Laker Women's Basketball Fall to Rangers

Laker Women's Basketball Fall to Rangers

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team (4-10, 1-5 GLIAC) fell to the Rangers of Wisconsin-Parkside (9-7, 5-2 GLIAC) by a final score of 86-70 on Thursday.

True freshman Grace Bradford (Glen Arbor, Mich.) got the Lakers on the board early with a three from the top of the key as both teams battled in the opening minutes. The Rangers would pull slightly ahead, but another three from Bradford closed out the first quarter of action to keep the Lakers within five.

CeCe Hacker (Omaha, Neb.) and Mattison Rayman (Otsego, Mich.) combined for a quick five points to tie the score at 22-22. However, Parkside was able to pull back out ahead with a 14-0 run. Rayman was able to grind her way to the free throw line to keep her team within striking distance, but Parkside would ultimately take a 41-28 advantage into the halftime break.

The Lakers fought back in the second half, including an and-one opportunity from Margot Woughter (Traverse City, Mich.) that resulted in an offensive put back from Bradford and back-to-back threes from Woughter and Brittany Bowman (Kingsley, Mich.), and the Lakers were able to catch fire and battle their way back into the game, closing out the third quarter with a 15-2 run to get back to within single digits. However, the Rangers would once again pull back ahead in the fourth quarter, and despite several baskets from Rayman and Hacker, Parkside would ice the game away at the charity stripe.

Despite the loss, Rayman would once again have another impressive performance, leading her team offensively with 22 points, placing her only six shy of 1000 for her career. Woughter would not be far behind with 16 points of her own, and Bradford joined her teammates in double-digit scoring with 11 while also securing nine rebounds, one shy of a double-double.

The Lakers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 14 when they take on the Purdue Northwest Pride inside Bud Cooper Gymnasium with tipoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
