Salisbury, N.C. -- The Wayne State University softball squad began the 2012 Catawba Invitational with a 1-0 triumph over previously unbeaten Shippensburg (2-1 overall) Friday afternoon at the Salisbury Community Park.
Game two against Lock Haven was postponed due to heavy rains with the Warriors leading 3-0 in the top of the first. The game will be re-started on Saturday morning.
The lone run came in the bottom of the second as junior outfielder
Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) had a leadoff single. Following a sacrifice bunt by freshman

Emily Bryce () was hit by a pitch. Freshman
Shannon Hilton (Gilford, Ont. / Bradford) drew a seven-pitch walk and with two outs, sophomore second baseman
Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) drew a bases loaded walk.
Senior pitcher
Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) went the distance allowing just three hits over the final three frames after having a no-hitter through five innings. It was Cain's sixth career shutout.
In addition to the make-up game vs. Lock Haven, WSU was scheduled to play two other games on Saturday - 10 am vs. East Stroudsburg and 4 p.m. against 32nd-ranked Kutztown.
