Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball team (23-19 overall, 15-9) won game one Sunday, 7-5, at Lake Superior State University (7-24 overall, 4-20 GLIAC) to extend its winning streak to eight games, but the host Lakers won the nightcap 10-2.

With just eight league games remaining, the Warriors sit in third place, three games behind Grand Valley and two games behind Ashland.  WSU is one game ahead of both Hillsdale and Ohio Dominican, and two games ahead of Findlay who travels to Detroit on Wednesday.

In the opener at LSSU, sophomore second baseman Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) homered leading off the game, and two outs later senior first baseman Rebecca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) smacked a round-tripper.

The Lakers scored once in the bottom of the first on a double, a stolen base and a single.

WSU regained a two-run lead in the third on a two-out walk to sophomore left fielder Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) and an RBI double by senior third baseman Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy).

The Warriors added four runs in the fourth on four hits and three LSSU miscues.  Junior outfielder Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) started the frame with a single and the next two batters were retired.  Freshman catcher Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) walked, and senior shortstop Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) followed with an RBI single.  Fulton drove in Bryce with Histed scoring on an error.  Two batters later, Allen singled in Fulton.

LSSU had a three-run single in the fifth with two outs to make it 7-4, then scored once in the seventh and had the bases loaded with no outs after the run had scored but WSU senior pitcher Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) retired the next three Laker hitters.

Cain improved to 15-9 despite allowing five earned runs on nine hits.  She struck out three and walked three.

Wayne State had eight hits off two Laker pitchers.

Allen went 3-for-4, while Fulton had two hits with each driving in a pair of runs.

LSSU began game two with three runs in the first, and after a pair of Warrior runs in the bottom of the first, Lake Superior responded with two more runs in the second.

The Lakers added two runs in the fourth and three more in the seventh as the WSU was out-hit 22-9 in the contest.

White had a one-out single in the first, and with two outs, Ryan drilled her second home run of the day.

Wayne State left seven runners on base, but LSSU stranded 12.

Warrior starter Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) allowed five earned runs on eight hits in two innings.  Emily Wickerham (North Branch, Mich.) tossed the final five innings giving up five earned runs on 14 hits.

Sophomore Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont.) went 3-for-3, while both White and Foreman had two hits in the game.

Wayne State will host Findlay on Wednesday for a GLIAC twinbill.  Both games will be televised live on XFinity channel 900 with Ben Holden and Lisa Seymour calling the action.
