Charger women top Ferris 4-3 to stay unbeaten

The last two matches have put the Hillsdale College women's tennis team to the test, but the Chargers once again got the job done against a tough regional opponent in a 4-3 road victory over Ferris St. on Saturday.

Both Sarah Hackman at No. 2 singles and Kamryn Matthews at No. 4 singles overcame some early adversity to win crucial points for the Chargers in the narrow victory.

Hackman dropped the first set 2-6 to Agata Klak of Ferris but came back strong, rolling 6-1, 6-2 to win in three sets. Matthews, meanwhile lost a 6-7 tiebreak in her first set against Brittany Lavenant of Ferris but gutted out a 6-4 second set win and then came out on top in a second tiebreak, 7-6 in the third set to prevail and seal the match for Hillsdale.

Katie Bell of Hillsdale defeated Morgan Waller of Ferris 6-1, 7-6 at No. 3 singles, and Sophia Spinazze of Hillsdale won a 6-3, 6-4 match over Sam Stephenson of Ferris at No. 6 singles as well for the Chargers.

Matthews and her partner, Canela Luna, also won 6-4 at No. 3 doubles for the Chargers, but a 7-6 tiebreak win for Ferris at No. 1 doubles allowed the Bulldogs to claim the doubles point by a narrow margin.

Hillsdale is now 6-0 on the season and coming off back-to-back impressive wins over quality Midwest region opponents.

The Chargers are now off until their Spring Break trip to Florida, starting with two matches on March 9 at Broward College and Palm Beach Atl.
