Women's Basketball Triumphs 67-55 At Purdue Northwest

Warriors extend winning streak to three games.

HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (14-6 overall, 7-4 GLIAC) extended its winning streak vs. the Purdue Northwest Pride (9-12 overall, 4-7 GLIAC) to six games with a 67-55 road court victory on Saturday afternoon.  The triumph also made the Warriors winners of three straight, including two on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The host Pride connected on back-to-back triples on its first two possessions of the game for an early 6-0 lead.  WSU responded with seven consecutive points on field goals by sophomore Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.), a triple by redshirt senior Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) and a lay-up by junior Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center).

A long-range shot by redshirt senior Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) knotted the score at 10-10 just over 3:30 into the contest.  After trailing 13-10, the Warriors once again tallied seven straight points, which began with a bucket from Lutchka and concluded with a triple by junior Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma).

Wayne State led 22-20 after 10 minutes in a period which saw four ties, five lead changes and both teams making eight field goals, including three triples.

Second Quarter
The only two lead changes of the stanza occurred in the first 90 seconds with Wayne State taking the lead for good on a jumper by Lutchka which put the Warriors in front 26-25.

WSU extended its advantage with baskets by sophomore Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and senior ZaMaria Polk (Detroit, Mich. / Mumford), followed by a pair of free throws from freshman McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center), and concluding with a triple from McArthur, which made it a 10-point margin (35-25) with just over 90 seconds to play before intermission.

Purdue Northwest scored the final five points to pull within five (35-30) at halftime.

Third Quarter
Buckets by Tripp and Lutchka pushed the advantage to nine (39-30) early in the second half, and WSU's lead was never fewer than six (39-33, 41-35, 43-37).

Two more free throws by Ferguson in the waning seconds of the period gave Wayne State a 51-40 lead heading into the final stanza.

Fourth Quarter
Ferguson began the final period with a conventional three-point play, which pushed the margin to 14 (54-40).

PNW tallied 11 of the next 13 points to cut its deficit to five (56-51) with 6:53 remaining prompting a timeout for WSU head coach Carrie Lohr.

The Warriors responded with a field goal by McArthur, a triple from Ferguson, and after a Pride hoop, Tripp made two lay-ups in a span of 47 seconds to seal the victory.

After Purdue Northwest's Dash Shaw made the two foul shots with 6:53 remaining, PNW only made one field goal (1-of-5) and two free throws in the final 6:50, plus had four turnovers.
