Lady Cards drop heartbreaker in 90th minute to Maryville, 1-0

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- Opening the 2019 season with a tough regional opponent, the SVSU Women's Soccer team hosted the Maryville University Saints on Friday (Sep. 6) afternoon at Braddock Field. In a match that was mostly controlled by the Cardinals, the Saints would pull out the victory with a late goal, taking a 1-0 victory in the 90th minute.

The first 45 minutes of action went scoreless and the Cardinals posted a 7-3 advantage in shots while the Saints held a slim 1-0 edge in corner kicks.

The second half went mostly the same, as Saginaw Valley had the decisive edge in shots again at 10-5 for an overall 17-8 advantage. The final 45 minutes saw the Cards have four corners to Maryville's one as well.

It was the final shot of the match that would matter, however, as the Saints snuck the ball through the Cardinal defense and Amanda Kaltwasser found Alex Johnson on the right side. She snuck one in the back of the net with just 40 seconds remaining, sealing the one-goal victory for the Saints.

Jennifer Muana led the offensive attack with four shots, putting one on goal. Madie Saleh added three shots while Whitney Fleming and Hannah Tarnaski each had two shot, with Fleming putting one on net.
