Men's Tennis Falls 6-1 at Toledo

Freshman Max Rink tallies a win for WSU in the first match of his collegiate career.

Senior Taylor Vane played close matches at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles.
TOLEDO, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team (0-1 overall, 0-0 GLIAC) lost 6-1 at Division I University of Toledo (1-4 overall, 0-0 MAC) on Friday night.

DOUBLES RESULTS
At the first doubles flight, seniors Griffin Mertz (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) and Taylor Vane (Southampton, England) fell 6-4 to Omar Espinosa and Luka Vitosevic.

Redshirt junior Derek Sammons (Coldwater, Mich.) and freshman Max Rink (Wetzlar, Germany) partnered up at No. 3 doubles, losing 6-3 to Juan Carranza and Cole Shoults.

At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, Germany) and junior Pierre Renaudie (Sathonay-Camp, France) were ahead 5-4 against Tyler Gargas and Thawin Suksathaporn.  Their match was cut short, however, once Toledo swept the first two matches.

INDIVIDUAL RESULTS
Karcz fell to Vitosevic at No. 1 singles after losing a first-set tiebreaker and a close second set (7-6(1), 6-4).

Vane was defeated by Danilo Vukotic at the second singles flight (6-3, 6-4).

Mertz lost to Suksathaporn at No. 3 singles (6-4, 6-1).

At No. 4 singles, Renaudie fell 7-5 in the first set before claiming the second (6-3) vs. Espinosa.  Renaudie lost in a 10-point tiebreaker (10-3).

Freshman Max Rink (Wetzlar, Germany) was the only Warrior to leave the court with a victory after a win over Serjen Olmedo at No. 5 singles (6-3, 6-1).

Sammons lost his No. 6 singles match against Gargas (6-2, 6-2).

WSU will host Lawrence Tech in its first home match of the season on Wednesday, Feb. 6, at 2:00 PM.
