Golden Bears complete weekend sweep of Ashland

Concordia extends home winning streak to seven games

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (3-1, 2-0 GLIAC) continued its strong early season play with an 18-5 win over Ashland University (1-3, 0-2 GLIAC) on Sunday at the Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium.

The Golden Bears will now embark on a grueling six game road swing through Michigan's Upper Peninsula for a pair of games against Northern Michigan in GLIAC play next weekend on Friday and Sunday, March 26 & 28 before heading to Michigan's mainland against GLIAC favorite #10 Grand Valley State for a pair, then to Missouri for non-conference games at #2 Lindenwood in the St. Louis area before heading across the state to Kansas City to face Rockhurst.

Today's win for Concordia is the seventh home win in a row dating back to April 20, 2019 and is also the seventh straight win in the Concordia Dome dating back to March 15, 2019. Concordia improves to 15-10 at home and 13-6 in the Concordia Dome, and is 3-0 all-time against Ashland.

Senior Lex Seifert led the Golden Bears with a career-high seven point performance, scoring a career-high four goals and dishing out three assists. The seven point game is the fifth most in program history and she now leads the team with 13 points and nine assists through four games.

Junior Sara McNicoll and sophomore Molly Moynihan each had four point performances, with McNicoll scoring twice and adding two assists while Moynihan had a three goal game with one assist. McNicoll is second on the team with 10 points and leads the team with eight goals while Moynihan is in a three-way tie for third on the team with seven points and five goals.

Freshman goalie Maddy Huebner won her second straight start in the crease with 10 saves including seven in the first half to help CSP build a 12-3 at the break. She also collected six ground balls in front of the net.

Defensively, Valerie Bragg produced three caused turnovers, a pair of ground balls and added a pair of draw controls.

CSP was strong on the draw with a 14-11 advantage, led by senior Sarah Pierson with six as she also added four ground balls and four caused turnovers. Offensively, Pierson chipped in with a goal and an assist. Including her career from Wilmington, Pierson now has 188 career draw controls and is leading the team 19 this season while also leading the team with 12 ground balls.

Off the bench, junior Mary Keating had a pair of goals and an assist while adding four draw controls and a pair of ground balls.

Concordia started the game with a 3-0 lead in the seventh minute and added another three goal spurt following Ashland's first goal for a 6-1 lead into the 12th minute. After Ashland once again stopped the CSP 3-0 scoring run just over the halfway point of the first half, Concordia scored four straight amidst an 8-1 scoring run that propelled the lead into double-digits, 14-3 early in the second half. Concordia would lead by at least 10 goals the rest of the contest.

Concordia continued to hold steady leads in turnovers, committing just 16 compared to 23 for Ashland while holding a 28-20 advantage in ground balls. Concordia also executed 14-of-15 clears while holding Ashland to 11-of-16. The result added up to a decisive 36-17 shot margin including a 29-15 margin in shots on goal.

Ashland was led by Kristen Ogle with two goals and an assist, adding four ground balls. Jillian Rekulak took the loss, making 11 saves on the 29 shots on goal.
