Fifth Inning Trips Up Baseball in Loss at Hillsdale

The Warriors led 6-1 in the fourth inning but lost 10-9.

HILLSDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball program (13-6) finally returned to action on Wednesday but lost 10-9 at Hillsdale (12-15).  A six-run fifth inning allowed Hillsdale to overcome a 6-1 deficit and go on to secure the home victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors struck first with three runs on two hits in the top of the first inning.  Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) started the frame off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) singled to center field to put runners on the corners with one out.  Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School), Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) and Logan Tobel (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland) drew walks to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead.  Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly to center field.  The Chargers responded with a run in the bottom of the first inning.

DeLanoy connected for his fourth home run of the season to right center in the third inning to give WSU a 4-1 advantage.  Foley singled home a run in the top of the fourth inning and Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) made it 6-1 with a sacrifice fly later in the inning.

Hillsdale loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth inning with three singles.  Another base hit produced two runs, bringing Hillsdale within three, 6-3.

The home side scored six runs on four hits and four walks in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 9-6 lead.  DeLanoy cut down a runner at home to end the frame.  The momentum stayed with the Chargers in the sixth inning as they extended their advantage to 10-6 with a solo home run.

WSU started to chip away with a run in the top of the seventh inning.  MacLean drove home the run with a sacrifice fly following a Foley single, a pair of wild pitches and a walk to DeLanoy.  Ramirez and Brett Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) led off the eighth inning with walks prior to Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) singling home WSU's eighth run of the game.  DeLanoy made it a one-run game, 10-9, as he drove in his second run of the afternoon with a sac fly later in the eighth inning.

Tanderys started the ninth inning with a single into left center field and then Ramirez was hit by a pitch.  Zimmerman struck out swinging before Miller battled in the game's final at-bat but was unable to drive in the tying run.

AT THE PLATE
Foley finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI.  DeLanoy was 2-for-3 with two RBI, a home run, two runs and a walk.  Tanderys was on base four times, going 2-for-4 with two walks.  Miller also had two hits and scored twice.

ON THE MOUND
Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) allowed three runs in four innings before Jacob Raymond (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) was tagged for four runs on one hit and three walks.

Ryan Szlachcic (Jenison, Mich. / Hudsonville) (0-1) allowed two runs in his inning of work and  Joey Muzljakovich (Mayfield, Mich. / Traverse City St. Francis) was touched for one run and struck out two batters in his inning of relief.

Both Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) and David Thurman (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Edison) tossed scoreless innings to give the Green & Gold a chance late in the contest.
