Shorthanded Chargers fall at Davenport, 7-0

With holes in the lineup from battling injuries, the Hillsdale College men's tennis team couldn't keep pace with a strong Davenport team in a 7-0 loss on Saturday.

The Chargers dressed only five players, forcing them to default at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles in the morning match played at MVP Sportsplex in Grand Rapids.

Despite the defaults, Hillsdale fought hard in the match. Playing against a nationally-ranked team at No. 1 doubles, Hillsdale's pairing of Sean Barstow and Tyler Conrad pushed Juan-Louis van Antwerpen and Jonathan Bulmer to the brink in a 7-5 loss, and the Chargers' No. 2 doubles team of Daniel Gilbert and Bogdan Janiciejevic fell 6-3 as well as Davenport took the doubles point.

In singles action, Conrad came the closest to earning a victory for Hillsdale, taking a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Davenport's Quintan Van Wijk at No. 2 singles, while the Chargers' Sam Clyde also was competitive in a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Bennet Dozeman at No. 5 singles.

The Chargers (2-3) are in action again tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. in Big Rapids, Michigan, taking on Midwest Regional power Ferris State for their next contest.
