Softball Drops 5-1 Decision To Mankato

Winter Haven, Fla. -- The 14th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (9-2 overall) fell 5-1 to Minnesota State (Mankato) in its opening game of the 2014 Rebel Spring Games.

The Mavericks (3-4 overall) scored three unearned runs in the top of the first on a pair of hits and a couple of Warrior miscues.

Minnesota State added an insurance run in the third on a leadoff single by Karli DesLauries, a stolen base and an RBI single by Kelly Wood.

WSU scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth.  After the first two batters were retired, Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont. / Centennial C.V.I.) singled to center field, went to second on a walk to Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) and scored on a single by Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova College).

The Mavericks tallied the final run in the seventh off WSU reliever Amy Campagnolo (Guelph, Ont. / Saint David Catholic S.S.) on a leadoff double by Ashley Thell, a single by DesLauries and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Lindsay Erickson.

WSU was out-hit 7-5 in the contest with Butler recording two of the hits.

Butler pitched the first six innings allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits with seven strikeouts.

WSU will play later on Saturday against Northern State.
