Men's Tennis Suffers 4-1 Setback to #7-Indianapolis at ITA National Indoor Championship

The Warriors will play #5-West Florida in the 7th place match on Sunday at 8 a.m.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team (3-3 overall) lost 4-1 to the University of Indianapolis (5-1 overall) on Saturday afternoon in a consolation match of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) National Indoor Championship at UIndy Tennis Center.

The Warriors, ranked eighth in the country and seeded eighth for the tournament, played the fifth-seeded Greyhounds, who are ranked seventh in the nation.  Saturday's affair was also the second of three meetings in the regular season between WSU and UIndy.

DOUBLES
Indianapolis obtained the contests at the first two doubles positions to earn the opening point of the afternoon.

The lone victory for the Green and Gold in doubles came courtesy of Joe Steele (Beverly Hills, Mich. / U. of Detroit Jesuit) and Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany).  The duo downed Pedro Franca and David Simeonov 6-3 at the No. 3 position.

At the No. 1 spot, Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) dropped a 6-1 decision to Tom Zeuch and Matthieu Derache, while the second flight pairing of Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Dom Spicer (London, England) came up short 7-5 to Louis Picaud and Erwan Momo Andre.

SINGLES
The Greyhounds won three of the four completed singles matches to clinch the contest.

Drenth was the Warrior to earn a singles victory on Saturday, doing so 6-1, 6-3 over Simeonov at the No 2 position.  It was also the first finished singles contest of the afternoon.  Additionally, the triumph improved the German junior to 5-1 in his six dual matches this campaign in the category.

Hill lost 6-2, 6-3 to Manuel Lanteri at the sixth position, while Grey - facing the second-ranked singles player in the country in Zeuch, was downed 6-1, 7-5 at the first flight.

Momo Andre's 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win over Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich. / Walled Lake Central (United States Air Force Academy)) at the No. 5 position served as the fourth point for UIndy and ended the festivities on Saturday.

Spicer and Joe Kelt (Ilkley, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom) did not see the end of their matches at the third and fourth positions, respectively.  Picaud (6-3) and Spicer (6-4) split the opening two sets, with Picaud ahead 2-0 in the final one when action ended.

Kelt (6-4) and Derache (6-1) also split their first two sets.  The UIndy student-athlete had a 3-1 advantage in the third set when the match ended prematurely.
