CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Wayne State University women's basketball team (3-1 Overall, 3-1 GLIAC) played its second game of a two-game road trip Saturday afternoon against Davenport (1-3 Overall, 1-3 GLIAC) losing 60-58. It was WSU's fourth game in six days, which led to the Warriors shooting just 50 percent (11-of-22) from the foul line.
FIRST HALF RECAP
The Warriors scored on the game's first possession with
Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) making lay-up.
Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) scored seven points to extend the Warriors lead to five (15-10).
Davenport kept it close the rest of the first quarter with the Warriors leading 19-17 after 10 minutes.
Wayne State's largest lead of the game came in the opening period (seven points at 19-12), before the Panthers tallied the final five points of the quarter.
In the second quarter, there were only two lead changes but the largest advantage was four (31-27) by WSU. The Warriors ended the first half with a one-point lead over Davenport at 33-32.
SECOND HALF RECAP
The Warriors attempted to keep their lead with George scoring on a jumper to push the lead to three at 35-32. But Davenport tied the game at 35-35 on a triple by Toni Grace.
Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich./ North Farmington) succeeded on her two free throws to put WSU ahead 37-35.
The lead did not last long as Davenport ended the third period on a 12-5 run to lead 47-42.
The Panthers kept the momentum into the fourth quarter extending their lead to 11 (55-44) just over 3:30 into the final stanza. It would be DU's largest lead of the game.
Wayne State tried to make a comeback but never got closer than two points the rest of the way and ended up losing 60-58 at Davenport.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
George led the Warriors with 19 points. Cherney contributed 13 points, a game-best nine rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Fugate helped with 12 points.
LEADING THE PANTHERS
Grace led the Panthers with a game-high 20 points, while Scout Nelson chipped in with 11 points, while Kenzie Wilkinson led DU with eight rebounds.
TEAM STATS
Wayne State made 44 percent (22-of-50) of its field goals and 20 percent (3-of-15) from three-point range. Meanwhile, Davenport shot 33 percent (20-of-60) from the floor and 25 percent (5-of-20) on shots from beyond the arc. DU made 83 percent (15-of-18) of its foul shots, while the Warriors connected on just 50 percent (11-of-22). The Panthers held a 42-32 edge in rebounds.
