Bulldogs Suffer Sunday Afternoon Setback In Upper Peninsula At Michigan Tech

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's volleyball squad closed out the weekend in Michigan's Upper Peninsula with a 3-0 setback against Michigan Tech on Sunday (Sept. 19) afternoon at the SDC Gymnasium in Houghton.

The host Huskies opened the tilt with a 25-20 win in the opening frame and then held off FSU 25-22 in the second before sealing the win with a 25-17 decision in the third.

The Bulldogs were limited to a .192 attack figure for the contest with 36 kills and 17 hitting errors on 99 total attempts. FSU also had eight service mistakes compared to only three aces in the decision.

Meanwhile, Michigan Tech compiled a .207 hitting percentage, coming up with 38 kills and only 15 errors on 111 attacks. The Huskies netted nine aces with five service errors.

Ferris State was led by senior right-side hitter Katie O'Connell and middle hitter Kira Merkle as both had nine kills each. Olivia Henneman-Dallape added eight kills in the contest.

The Bulldogs were led defensively by libero Nina Gorgijevska with a team-best 20 digs. O'Connell and setter Kaylee Maat both chipped in with nine digs and Maat added 29 assists. O'Connell also had four block assists.

MTU was paced by returnee Anna Jonynas with 12 kills. Megan Utlak had 16 digs and Laura De Marchi posted 30 assists to go with nine digs for the home squad.

Ferris State returns home and will host rival Grand Valley State on Thursday, Sept. 23, inside the Ewigleben Sports Arena starting at 7 p.m. (ET).
