Salisbury, N.C. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (4-4 overall) won two of three games on Saturday at the Catawba Invitational.
Friday's second scheduled game against Lock Haven was re-started since yesterday's game was stopped in the top of the first due to heavy rains. Wayne State still prevailed 8-3.
Bright and early Saturday morning, the Warriors scored five times in the top of the first on three consecutive singles by sophomore second baseman
Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.), sophomore left fielder
Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) and senior third baseman
Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy). Senior first baseman
Rebecca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) worked a nine-pitch bases-loaded walk to drive in the first run of the game. Freshman
Shelby Spano (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) and sophomore
Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont.) also had an RBI in the frame.
WSU added two more runs in the fourth on a leadoff single by senior shortstop
Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) followed by a two-run home run by Fulton to center field on an 0-2 offering.
Wayne State's final run came in the sixth on a one-out double by Allen and an RBI single by Spano.
LHU scored twice in the second off WSU starter
Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) before senior
Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) recorded the third out. Cain then allowed one run in the third but no more after that. Lock Haven had the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the seventh, but a 1-2-3 double play and a ground out ended the contest.
In Saturday's originally scheduled morning game, Wayne State posted an 11-2 five-inning triumph over East Stroudsburg.
The WSU Warriors scored 11 runs in the first two innings on 11 hits, and did not allow an ESU Warrior to reach third base until the top of the fifth.
After Spano's sacrifice fly started the scoring in the first, junior outfielder
Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) had a two-run double and freshman outfielder
Shannon Hilton (Gilford, Ont. / Bradford) followed with an RBI single.
Eleven Wayne State batters hit in the second inning with Allen and Spano having back-to-back RBI singles, and Hilton smacking a two-run triple to right center. Histed and White also contributed RBI singles.
ESU scored twice in the fifth on a pair of singles and a double off Wayne State junior hurler
Emily Wickerham (North Branch, Mich.), who was making her first as a Warrior. She walked two and did not strike out a batter to earn her first win at WSU.
The 32nd-ranked Kutztown Bears scored three times in the bottom of the first on two hits, two walks and a hit by pitch and went on to defeat Wayne State 6-1 Saturday evening.
Lee went the distance in the circle for the Warriors striking out four and walking three.
The lone WSU run was a second inning blast over the centerfield fence by Foreman. Both Foreman and Histed had two hits in the contest, while White had WSU's fifth hit.
Wayne State is scheduled to play UMass-Lowell at 10 a.m. on Sunday in the final game for the Warriors before their spring break trip to the Rebel Spring Games (March 10-17).
