Women's Tennis Continues Florida Trip With 6-1 Win Over Palm Beach Atlantic

The Warriors have won three straight matches in the Sunshine State.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The No. 7-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (12-1 overall) handled Palm Beach Atlantic University (4-8 overall, 0-4 Sunshine State) by a 6-1 score on Monday afternoon at the Mitch Gornto Tennis Center.

DOUBLES
The Sailfish jumped ahead early by recording the win in doubles and picking up the point.

WSU won its doubles contest at the No. 1 spot, with Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) winning 6-2 over Jelsy Croes and Jasmine Williams.

Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) and Shanice Weekes (London, England) fell by a 6-3 score at the No. 3 spot.

The point came down to the action at No. 2 doubles, with Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) dropping the tiebreaker (7-5) to Greta Langiu and Cecilia Peroni to give the home team the 1-0 edge.

SINGLES
The Green and Gold did not let the loss in doubles affect them, as the team swept all six singles matches to claim victory.

Weekes nearly shut out Anabelle Robichaud, winning 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 6 spot.

Arafat recorded the same victory at the No. 3 spot (6-0, 6-2) over Alessia Passerini.

Winning for the 13th time in singles this spring was Szpakowska, who pulled out a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over her opponent, Frida Alsterhem.

At the No. 2 spot, Komar needed three sets to defeat Langiu after falling 6-4 in the opening set.  She recovered and won the next two sets convincingly, 6-2, 6-1.

Likewise to her WSU teammate, Gorgidze also lost her first set (6-2) at the No. 4 spot.  She then went on to post victories of 6-4 and 6-3 in the final two sets to win.

Finally, Ruyssen remained perfect in singles action with her 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Alina Hoermann.  The No. 14-ranked singles player in the nation moved to 13-0 at the top singles position this season.
