Ferris Sate Falls In Opening Game Of Weekend At Northern Michigan

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball squad opened its weekend trip to Michigan's Upper Peninsula with a 77-61 setback at Northern Michigan in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on Saturday (Jan. 23) in Marquette.

The host Wildcats bolted out to a 19-12 first quarter lead and increased the margin to 11 points at halftime en route to the win.

NMU got a game-high 31 points from Makaylee Kuhn and connected on 12-of-25 (48%) three's in the victory. The Wildcats converted at a 53% clip from the floor and also made nine-of-11 (81.8%) free throws.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs were held to 40.7% shooting on the road and FSU went seven-of-22 (31.8%) from long range in addition to six-of-11 (54.5%) at the line.

Freshman guard Kadyn Blanchard led the Bulldogs with a team-high 14 points while sophomore guard Mallory McCartney added 13 points. FSU had four players reach double-figure scoring as freshman guard DeShonna Day earned the start and totaled 12 points with Ellie Dykstra totaling 11 points on the front line.

NMU owned a decisive 37-19 rebounding edge, but also had 13 turnovers compared to only seven for the Bulldogs.

In addition to Kuhn's 31 points, the Wildcats got 17 points from Elena Alaix and 11 by Elizabeth Lutz.

The two teams will square off again on Sunday (Jan. 23) in the weekend finale starting at 1 p.m. (ET) in Marquette.
