Men's Tennis Defeats #20-Tiffin For Sixth Consecutive Triumph

The Warriors have outscored their opponents 37-2 during the winning streak.

DETROIT -- The No. 14-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (16-9 overall) continued winning play with a 6-1 victory over No. 20-ranked Tiffin University (16-2 overall) in an all-ranked contest on Wednesday at the Duchene Athletic Facility for the squad's sixth consecutive win.

DOUBLES
The Warriors picked up victories from the first and second positions in doubles action to secure the early point.

Coming into the match as the third-ranked doubles pair in the nation, Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) captured a 6-3 win over Matthew Telford and Michael Gurtner.  At their usual top flight spot, the pair improved to 17-7 on the spring slate.

Also registering a victory were Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany).  In the very first time the two have played with each other in either the fall or spring schedule, they grabbed a 6-1 win against Ruben Fonga and Matthew Weaver.

Dom Spicer (London, England) and Emil Mikkelsen (Soenderborg, Denmark) had their contest at the No. 3 spot go unfinished, after the Green and Gold already claimed the point while they were still playing.

SINGLES
The Warriors won five of six singles matches, falling one short of posting a fifth straight shutout performance.

Drenth, the No. 26-ranked singles player in the nation, drew a tough task against the fourth-ranked player in Fonga.  The Warrior rose to the occasion and defeated the Tiffin player in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (3) at the top spot to record a seventh straight dual match victory.

Notching wins with similar scores were Grey and Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich.).  Grey won 6-3, 6-1 vs. Gurtner at the No. 2 spot, while Kitayama secured a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Maxime Navrotehi.

Karcz handled Telford by scores of 7-6 and 6-3 at the No. 3 spot.

Entering as the No. 59-ranked singles player, Spicer garnered another win (his third in a row) with a 6-3, 6-3 defeat of Weaver at the fourth position.

Falling at the sixth flight was Laws, who won the opening set 6-1, but could not finish the job.  He dropped a 6-4 decision to Cyrille Colomb in the second set, then lost 10-4 in the race to 10 tiebreaker.

FROM COACH MORROW
"Great team victory today against a tough opponent!  We fought hard, played great, and I am so proud of the guys for the way they went out there and competed against one of the better teams in the nation.  This was an important win against a program in our region [Midwest Region] that will be a factor come postseason play," said head coach Bryan Morrow.

UP NEXT
Wayne State was scheduled to host Ashland in another contest on March 12, but the match was canceled and will not be played.  WSU will next look to wrapping up regular season action this weekend with a home back-to-back against conference rivals.  The team will first host Davenport on Friday at 10 a.m.
