WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (March 14, 2022)-After being able to gain an extra doubleheader in Florida, the Stonehill College softball team fell in hard-fought games to Caldwell University 5-1, and 5-4 versus Wayne State Monday.

Game 1: Stonehill 1, Caldwell 5

Standout Performances:

Key Moments:

  • Caldwell struck first in the second when Emma Cooney hit an RBI single up the middle that scored Ashleigh Tavaska for an early 1-0 lead.
  • However, thanks to a four-run third (5-0), the Cougars were able to pull away that featured a two-run home run from Tavaska.
  • The Skyhawks ended up getting one run back (5-1) in the bottom half of the third when Weiss capitalized on a passed ball to cross home plate.
  • Stonehill threatened again in the bottom of the fourth when both Dawes and Marissa Dwyer both singled. Caldwell starter, Kayla Daly retired the next two batters to end the rally and kept the Skyhawks offense at bay for the 5-1 win.

Pitching Records:

Win: Caldwell-Kayla Daly (1-0)

Loss: Stonehill-Skylar Brandemarte (3-3)

Game 2: Stonehill 4, Wayne State 5

Standout Performances:

Key Moments:

  • After drawing three straight walks to start the first, the Skyhawks struck first after Dawes forced a fourth straight walk for the first run. In the next at-bat, Dwyer drew a fifth straight walk for the early 2-0 lead.
  • However, in the third inning, the Warriors added three runs to reclaim the lead (3-2) that featured a two-run RBI off the bat of Mady Ruczynski
  • In the fifth, Wayne State added on another insurance run Breanna Paolatto singled up the middle to make it 4-2.
  • Down to their last out in the seventh, Stonehill had runners on second and third before Lynch ripped a two-run RBI double down the left-field line and tied the game at four.
  • Unfortunately, in the bottom of the seventh, the Warriors walked off with the win after Becky Hodder laid down a perfectly placed bunt for the game-winning RBI.
